History A/S Plastmontage, Plastmo Ltd., Plastmo Inc.

In 1959 textile merchant Knud Harbom of Copenhagen Denmark purchased Plastmontering. Plastmontering was a small company engaged in the fabrication of specialty plastic tanks and basins for the medical and chemical industry. Plastmontering had just begun experimenting with vinyl raingutters which Mr. Harbom believed had great potential. He had the design work completed and purchased equipment to begin production of raingutter at a new location under the company name Plastmontage. A/S Plastmontage became the largest and most successful manufacturer of vinyl raingutter in Scandinavia branching into the production of a large number of PVC profiles for the building trades. In 1975 Plastmontage began production of Vinyl windows by the early 80's the window business had expanded to England where separate fabrication facilities were established. The Plastmontage window line became one of the largest in Scandinavia and England.

In 1972 Knud Harbom made the first of several trips to investigate the possibility of selling Vinyl Gutters in North America. In January 1976 with the assistance of Jorgen Stolsgaard and Edward Gunderson companies were established in Ontario Canada and Oregon U.S.A. to begin importation and sales of Vinyl Raingutter. Within two years Plastmo Ltd. was selling 25% of all rain gutter in Canada and Plastmo Inc. had firmly established vinyl raingutter on the west coast of the United States. Plastmo began the trend for vinyl raingutter to become the do it yourself standard in North America.

Late in 1976 Knud Harbom moved to the United States with his wife Sys and two youngest children Soren and Birthe. Son Chris remained in Denmark to complete his education in political science. Son John remained to finish his engineering degree and to work a time at Plastmontage.

Soren is now managing the warehouse in Jessup Maryland. Chris functions as East Coast sales manager and was responsible for establishing Plastmo in the Eastern United States. John moved to Canada in the early 80's to replace Jorgen who was returning to Denmark to work for his former employer. Current officers and directors are Soren Harbom, Knud C. Harbom, John Harbom, and Edward Gunderson.

In the mid 80's the Harbom's sold their interest in A/S Plastmontage and began a series of major investments in the North American operations.

In 1989 research was begun in Canada to develop a high performance vinyl window for North America. The result by fall 1990 was the A series casement and fixed windows. The A series was probably the first window in Canada to meet or exceed B7 for water infiltration. Plastmo is now supplying 11 fabricators in Canada and one in the United States with Fixed, casement, double hung, and double slider profiles.

All extrusion tooling used by Plastmo is from Germany, Austria, and Canada. Step down calibrators are used to eliminate shrinkage. Tooling has been designed to accommodate co-extrusion. Tooling is due to arrive soon for the Single Hung and Single Slider. Design work is underway for a door, atrium/garden window, and a tilt and turn designed for North America.
